Suncoast Community Capital held its final Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) session for 2012 on April 11. The program ran out of our offices for three months and prepared the income tax returns for 221 individuals with an average adjusted income of $23,618.7 in Manatee County at no cost. This year there was special emphasis on helping clients receive the “Earned Income Credit”. Resourceful volunteers helped participants receive $ $357,667 in returns, including $111,686 of the earned income tax credit.
“VITA’s biggest success was that we have this service for those who need it the most in this community,” said Jahna Leinhauser, VITA Site Coordinator for SCC.
“It was important not only to have the tax preparation service but also to educate people on wealth building and financial literacy,” Leinhauser said. Participants in the service were given free booklets with advice on how to spend, or save, their tax return money.
A big portion of VITA’s success can be attributed to support from the key community partners: Bradenton Central Community Redevelopment Agency, Manatee Community Federal Credit Union and Bradenton Press. We want to extend a big thank you to these partners!
Now that tax season is over SCC continues to focus on business development and entrepreneurship in Sarasota and Manatee Counties. We recently launched the Urban Entrepreneurship Partnership in cooperation with the Kauffman Foundation and continue to offer free one-on-one business advising.
